BLOOD VOMIT
"Up From the Grave" (Bloodsoaked Records / Eternal Night Productions)
Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter
Just from looking at the artwork alone you'd have to guess that Blood Vomit is a Cannibal Corpse clone. And you wouldn't be too far from the truth. But, in reality, Blood Vomit has old-school, Cannibal Corpse-styled death metal covered pretty well but also add a touch of horror movie-styled spoken word bits/screams and grinding madness not unlike Mortician to round out the band's rough and ready gory death metal.
"Up From The Grave" has 8 tracks clocking in at nearly 34 minutes. And therein lies the charm of "Up From The Grave." With the average song barely breaking the 3-minute barrier, the disc (and, in turn, the songs themselves) is long enough to keep your attention throughout, yet short enough to not wear out its welcome. The tracks are brutal and fast enough without becoming a mind-numbing blur - and that's no easy trick in the death metal genre.
While "Blood Vomit" is not original yet not entirely derivative I will not hesitate to include this band in death metal mix along the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Burial, and Enter Self when I spin death metal in my 5-CD changer.
"Up From The Grave" was produced by Keith Bernard. For a one-man project "Up From The Grave" has solid production values and a crystal clear sound.
Blood Vomit is Keith Bernard on vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum programming. Bernard has also worked with a band called Final Prayer and has contributed to studio sessions for gothic black metallers Akhkharu and the dark ambient band Erebus.
