BLOODSWORN

"All Hyllest Til Satan" (Agoria; 2008)

Reviewed by Metal Mark

This album was actually supposed to be released a decade ago; however, label problems prevented its release back then. It was later remixed in 2007 and now it finally gets to see the light of day.

The album starts out in very noisy fashion. Unfortunately, it's confusing, annoying noise rather than a brutal or aggressive style of noise. Perhaps they were shooting for chaos, but the results were not impressive.

A few songs in, they finally get a handle on the music ... to an extent. This is black metal with some old style thrash wedged into the cracks. They certainly have moments where they nail down some direction; however, they spend far too much time rummaging around in layers of mess. They could have gone heavy, fast or even a combination of the two and it would have worked. Instead, they get caught up in a web of sound that isn't doing enough to advance the songs. The vocals are typical at best and bland at worst.

More than anything else, I just got the sense that this band didn't have enough of a plan of what they were going to do. Granted, perhaps having to wait ten years to release has made this album seem a little dated. Still, I think that -- even if I had heard it back in 1999 -- I still wouldn't have been very impressed.
