"materia prima" (lapetus/Squatter Madras; 2010)

Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter

blld is a collaborative project between touch guitar extraordinaire Markus Reuter and multi-instrumentalist Ric Beyer. blld offers a healthy balance between improvised sounds and structured compositions. Reuter’s touch guitar swells and retreats for a vibrant collage of sounds. Beyer’s bass work and drumming are insistent, not quite frantic, always moving the rhythm and melody forward. Quiet beauty in the form of mellow pieces is the proverbial equalizer to the somewhat jarring, disjointed heavy rhythm sections.

Overall, blld’s music provides Isis-styled soundscapes (calm before storm) and King Crimson-styled avant garde approaches (prog for prog’s sake) in equal parts. blld appeals to the adventurous musical soul as “material prima” is a journey through sound and style.

“materia prima” was produced by Markus Reuter and Ric Byer, mixed by Fabio Trentini (Moonbound, The Season Standard, Tuner, Guano Apes).

blld is Ric Byer (a.k.a. 05ric) on bass, drums and vocals and Markus Reuter touch guitar. Gavin Harrison (ex-Porcupine Tree) plays drums on one track.
