BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION

"2" (J&R; 2011)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

Black Country Communion is a band that includes bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple. Trapeze, Black Sabbath), guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater). Based on those names alone, you get a pretty good picture inside your head as to what this album is going to sound like.

And, thankfully, that's exactly what it does sound like. "2" Is a classic rock album in the vein of modern Deep Purple and other bands of AOR. It’s got the incredible vocals of Hughes, always a highlight, plus (again, as you might expect) some jaw-dropping musicianship. It’s a great classic rock album, which means it's also an old-fashioned sounding record by nature but never hokey or sounding old or tired.

Maybe the songs don’t stick in your head as long as other music from these artists, but fans of the classic rock sounds, performed by some truly legendary musicians, makes "2" something to look for.
