BITTER SANE

"8th Hour of a Roller Coaster Ride" (Self-produced; 2008)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Upon hearing the first gritty riff that comes from your speakers on "8th Hour of a Roller Coaster Ride," you’ll immediately link this band to the Alice In Chains train. The vocals are geared toward that familiar harmony that Layne Staley possessed.

I’ll confess, there are too many AIC wannabe bands who emulate the same sound like in a hall of echoes. Bitter Sane have only five songs on this disc and,  although they lean toward a recognizable sound, they do give it a fresh blast with some hard driving guitar and unexpected interjections. I let the CD play through a few times to see if their album title was an indication of a head/gut combination but after a while it started to sound like one really long song.

The younger crowd who might not know AIC might pick this up because it sounds new to them and every now and then a different style emerges but it soon fades into the background and the comfortable and stale becomes forefront once again.

Rating Guide:

A classic. This record will kick your ass.

Killer. Not a classic but it will rock your world.

So-so. You've heard better.

Pretty bad. Might make a nice coaster.

Self explanatory. Just the sight of the cover makes you wanna hurl.
