BIGGER THAN PLASTIC
"Santa Sucks" (Self-produced; 2003)
Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton
"Santa Sucks" is an interesting holiday novelty record for a couple of reasons. The first is that the song, "Santa Sucks," rocks well enough, but isn't really as funny as the CD cover, which features a hunter standing triumphantly atop his fresh kill of Santa Claus and several reindeer. Don't get me wrong - the song is entertaining enough but it's not going to become a classic.
The second song on this 2-track CD, however, is a short (just over two minutes) but groovingly sweet cover rendition of The Doors classic, "Hello, I Love You." The crunchy guitars and funked up sound Bigger Than Plastic gives to this over 25-year old song makes it sound fresh and new. And it kicks some ass, too.
It's hard to tell much about any band from only two tracks, but the songs included on "Santa Sucks" are enough to tell me that I'd like to hear more from Bigger Than Plastic in the future.
Bigger Than Plastic: Joe Halsey - narration and bass; Dave Pantaleone - Vocals and guitar; Ray Pantaleone - drums, backing vocals; John Swanhart - guitar.
