BE YOUR OWN PET

"Get Awkward" (Ecstatic Peace!; 2008)

Reviewed by Jeff Rogers

Sometimes when I hear garage rock I cringe because it's too muddy and it trips over itself, but when I hear a band like Be Your Own Pet mix in some Indie rock with garage punk I sit up and take notice. Unfortunately this is their second and final disc. Too bad; they have a great sound and, with a female singer who spits lyrics like Blondie but with more distain, Be Your Own Pet is a great punk album.

The guitar is muddy but it rocks and there are some great solos. The drums are punk all the way, pounding through every song which averages about two minutes in length. Jemina Pearl is a great punk chick; the kind you wish would show up more often at the party. She doesn't want to talk about her feelings, she'd rather tell you off. There are two versions of this disc, a UK and US. Some songs were removed from the US version because they were too violent. Talk about the man keeping you down!

The CD booklet is very unique. It's cards with a picture of each band member with food all over them. On the flip side are questions such as "When Is Your Birthday?" and "What's Your Favorite Pizza Topping?" Stupid stuff, but pretty cool in its concept. The song "Food Fight!" is only a minute long but the aftereffects can be seen on the cards enclosed in the CD.

Be Your Own Pet: Jemina Pearl – vocals; Nathan Vasquez – bass, backing vocals; Jonas Stein – guitar, backing vocals; John Eatherly – drums.
