BETTER THAN EZRA
"Before the Robots" (Artemis; 2005)
Reviewed by Mike SOS
I first heard Better Than Ezra when the single "Good" hit the airwaves back in 1995. I visited their catalog via iTunes, picking and choosing songs that I had missed since then. I found this CD and thought I should add the band to the pages of Rough Edge.
These guys are alternative rock and post grunge. The music is very good and I've always liked them. There isn't anything threatening about them and they write radio hits so they keep up with modern radio. They are a trio so the music is tight and I like that they have a Spanish flavor on some of their songs.
This CD has 13 songs and over 50 minutes of music so it's good for driving. Since its alternative, the guitar is relatively tame but its sounds all right when Kevin lets loose on a song. There are guitar fillers instead of solos; he knows how to bend a string though.
The hits: "Burned," "A Lifetime," "American Dream," "Our Last Night," "Juicy," "Our Finest Year."
Better Than Ezra: Kevin Griffin - Vocals, Guitar, Piano; Tom Drummond – Bass; Travis Aaron McNabb – Drums.
