BEOWULF

"Westminster & 5th" (I Scream; 2007)

Reviewed by Mike SOS

Beowulf is an old school crossover act whose latest endeavor finds the band tuning back in to its skate punk roots.

Featuring 16 tracks that fly by in a vitriolic whirlwind of abrasive riffs and angular aggression, cuts like "Mission" use dissonance to their advantage while "Got an Itch" harkens back to the days when Black Flag and X were in their heyday.

Taking the DIY esthetic back to the beginning with style and grace without leaving out the intensity, Beowulf's travel back in time reminds us of a time when bursts of gritty three chord slice-of-life experiences shaped the sound that came up from the underground.
