BATTLEFRONT

"Among the Corpses" (Sliptrick Records; 2024)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"Among the Corpses" is five studio tracks and three live tracks from Mexico City's Battlefront. The studio tracks are pretty much standard metal (reminding me, strangely, of the NWOBHM sound) with heavy guitars, throbbing bass, driving drums and sturdy vocals. The production could be better on all four tracks—it's a little murky and thin at times—but they all work just fine to one degree or another.

The live tracks are another story. The energy level is higher (as it should be in a live performance), the songs sound leaner and sharper, the occasional pyrotechnics make an impact, and what seems to be the sounds of an enormous crowd draws you into the recording. The fact of the matter is that some bands are just better live than there are in the studio (I always thought Motorhead was one of those bands) and the live tracks on "Among the Corpses" are enough to recommend the EP, while the studio tracks are intriguing enough to make us want to hear more from the band.

Battlefront: Corvo Kenway – Bass; Fearr – Lead Guitar; Haze – Lead Guitar; James – Rhythm Guitar/Vocals; Moon – Drums
