BATON ROGUE MORGUE

"High End of the Season" (Self-released; 2009)

Reviewed by R. Scott Bolton

"High End of the Season" is a true find. This is one of those CDs that you'll want to find if you're a fan of the classic hard rock/heavy metal sound, and I'm talking about bands like W.A.S.P., Blue Oyster Cult, KISS and Skid Row here.

Every track on this CD is a driving, kick-ass, rock'n'roll tune with riff-heavy guitars, dynamite leads and song choruses that stick in your brain like a fork. Lead vocalist Lee Angel Morgue has a voice that reminds me of Gene Simmons, not so much in tone but in style, and he really delivers on most every track. The songs are instantly addictive and you'll probably do what I did ... let the album play through and then instantly want to hear it again. Track 1, "Hellride," will drag you back in every time.

This is the kind of hard rock/heavy metal album you hear enough of any more ... but you really wish you did! I can't wait to hear more from Baton Rogue Morgue.

"High End of the Season" also comes with a five-track DVD that includes a cover of Poison's "Look What the Cat Dragged In" and more. For a self-released CD, this is a terrific set, not only in production value on the recording but in value for your dollar overall. Highly recommended!
