AFTERSHOK

"Unfinished Business" (Self-produced)

Reviewed by Jason Savage

Aftershok is one of those bands that make music on their terms. This brand of old school metal hasn't been heard since the late 80s and from what I've read that doesn't bother the members of this band. If we were to take a trip back to that decade, Aftershok would've easily been huge and fit right in on the Hollywood Strip.

Vocally, Vic Hix has awesome pipes with excellent range. It is one those classic metal voices that blends bits and pieces of everyone that was big at that time. I'm hard pressed to narrow it down but you've heard it before and it rocks! Imagine Kevin Dubrow meets Dio meets Udo meets Michael Sweet, hell - even Keel, but that isn't entirely accurate. You really have to hear it to believe it.

This is raise your fist, full frontal head banging metal littered with lots of guitar solos that really smoke courtesy of George Mihalovich. As with the vocals, it's difficult to compare him to any one guitarist but he is immensely talented. This whole CD is very comfortable and fits me quite nicely. Now if I could find it on cassette tape, I'd really be stylin'! All the essential sounds are here too: revving motorcycles, howling wolves, air raid sirens and lyrics that talk about rainbows, war, Armageddon and being armed and dangerous!

This is pure unadulterated mullet metal at its best. Aftershok is primed and ready to hit the arenas with their powerful anthems of the past. Now if it were only the 80s, I'd be the first in line to buy this excellent piece of nostalgia. Be it as it may, this timeless work of art won't land them a record deal anytime soon, but it is sure to please any of us that still appreciate what that decade of decadence did for the genre of heavy metal. And yes, I wore my mullet proudly back in the day and after hearing this CD just may grow it back again! Wow, did I just say that?!

Aftershok: Vic Hix- lead vocals, George Mihalovich- guitars/vocals, George B.- drums/vocals, Nick G.- bass/vocals.
