ABSCESS
"Tormented" (Necropolis Records; 2001)
Reviewed by Brian Connelly
Once again, another run-of-the-mill group of former death metalheads
band together to create yet more easily recognizable death metal music. Abscess are ex-members of Ravenous, Autopsy, Death
and Hexx. They have lots of really scary sounding titles like "Deathscape in Flames" and
"Scratching at the Coffins" and such, plus plenty of songs that start with pseudo-puking noises.
So what does Abscess have going for them? One thing is the induction of speed metal pieces to slip
up the tempo in songs like "Rusted Blood" and "Filth Chamber." Another is dual screaming vocals
and great tension build ups and break downs a la "Madness and Parasites." Last but not
least, a good healthy dose of old-fashioned headbanging chugga-chugga ("Halo of Disease" and "Death
Runs Red").
It's a good thing this whole disc clocks just barely over half an hour. Any more than that and its
durability would be seriously put to the test. This is a, technically speaking, great disc, but
- with very few exceptions - nothing that hasn't been ventured before.
