ABOVE THIS
Reviewed by Jeff Rogers
I have never heard heavier music in my life, and I
don't think I ever will, unless Above This follow up "7L7" with something as
bombastic as this combo of Hardcore/Electro/Deathcore/Facemelter/Dubstep/HaterRaper/Badassness
(their words). I'm going to need a chiropractor for my brain -- it has been
shifted!
Holy bass drum, deathman! I've heard the term, "bring back the bass" and I'm
pretty sure that Above This did too and what they've done here is just, well,
it's hard to put into words because this stuff is so heavy. The vocals are gruff
and growling and the drums are dubstep with hardcore added in and the guitar is
heavy as well. There are no solos but plenty of raucous riffs that stomp with
the bass.
It's also addictive. You can't stop listening because, after awhile, their drug
of a monstrous sound is all you'll crave -- it's probably also all you'll be
able to take. Dubstep is making its way into metal and when you combine all
those styles mentioned above into one disc it makes for a heavier sound. The
other incredible thing about this band is that they use all those styles in
various songs; it's not just one long beat but several styles with different
sounds.
If you are looking for a band that will challenge your
heart rate, your taste in metal and your penchant for heavy music, I recommend
Above This. Just do me a favor, check with your doctor before starting this
regimen.
Above This: Shawn O'Brien - Vocals/Badassness; Thomas Buser - Lead Guitar; Wes
Jenkins - Rhythm Guitar; Brandon Lawrance - Bass/Synth; Johnny Bay -
Drums/Machine.
